2026 Award Recipients
ST. CLARE AWARD RECIPIENT: Miriam Stachowski
Miriam Stachowski is a long-time supporter and former Board Member of Franciscan Works. In 2016, Miriam volunteered for a month at Liberia Mission, where she taught remedial classes in reading and math. Miriam continued to stay involved with Franciscan Works as a Board Member from 2019-2024, giving generously of her time and resources to assist with fundraisers and mission appeals. We are so grateful for Miriam’s hard work and commitment to serving the youth of Liberia. She remains a faithful supporter and sponsor. St. Clare once said, “Let the love you have in your hearts be shown outwardly in your deeds.” Miriam truly lives out these words in her life.
ST. ANTHONY AWARD RECIPIENT: Ann Hoffman
Ann Hoffman is a dedicated donor and sponsor whose missionary spirit has greatly impacted Liberia Mission. Ann has generously supported major projects at Liberia Mission, in addition to helping further the education of our students in universities and trade schools, while also supporting young seminary students. Ann’s generosity helps empower the next generation of Liberian youth to break the cycle of poverty and become faithful, self-reliant, and compassionate leaders who will contribute to the transformation of their communities and country. St. Anthony of Padua said: “Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak.” Ann Hoffman embodies these words as she gives hope to the youth we serve.
ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE AWARD RECIPIENT: Flomo Kerkula
Flomo Kerkula is the Assistant Director of Liberia Mission and a former beneficiary of the Mission. He came to Liberia Mission in 2008, attending St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School before graduating from St. Kizito High School. Flomo worked as a house parent at Liberia Mission and was then promoted to Chief Financial Officer. Flomo continued his education at the University of Liberia, where he studied Public Administration. In 2024, he was promoted to Assistant Director of Liberia Mission and earned his MBA in Finance earlier this year. We are extremely grateful for all that Flomo does to support the youth of Liberia Mission. St. Maximilian Koble said, “Do not forget that holiness consists not in extraordinary actions, but in performing your duties towards God, yourself, and others well.” Flomo lives out these words as he helps lead and guide the Mission.
ST. THERESE AWARD RECIPIENT: Cross Catholic Outreach
Cross Catholic Outreach is a nonprofit that serves the poor and vulnerable across the world. Cross Catholic Outreach has greatly helped Liberia Mission by donating shipments of food and supplies, while also helping extend the security fence around the Mission’s property. Their staff have traveled to Liberia Mission, blessing and feeding not only the children at the Mission, but also the local community through their donations of MannaPack rice. We are extremely thankful for Cross Catholic Outreach’s partnership. Like St. Therese, they inspire us as they radiate Christ’s love and hope to the poorest of the poor.
ST. FRANCIS AWARD RECIPIENT: Carol and J.R. Smith
Carol and J.R. are long-time supporters whose committed generosity has made a meaningful difference at Liberia Mission. Because of their dedication and kindness, countless youth at Liberia Mission have been given the opportunity to receive a Catholic education, a loving home, nutritious meals, medical care, and support as they grow. St. Francis once said, “Start by doing what is necessary; then do what is possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” That is exactly what Carol and J.R. are helping us accomplish in Liberia. We thank Carol and J.R for their many years of generous support. They truly embody the virtues of St. Francis of Assisi.
