The WASSCE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is a non-profit organization based in Accra, Ghana, whose purpose is to administer standardized tests across the region of West Africa. At the end of the school year, 6th-graders, 9th-graders, and, beginning this year, even 3rd-graders prepare themselves to take this test that is an measure of educational standards throughout the national of West Africa.

However, the most important test of them all is perhaps the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASCCE), which high- school seniors take at the end of their secondary education journey. A passing mark on the WASSCE is essential for entrance to universities, acquisition of passports, or even entrance to the seminary!

Presently, we have eleven high-school seniors that have been preparing to take the WASSCE since August. Our St. Kizito students have been going to school three days a week to study the various subjects included in the WASSCE, and our Booker Washington Institute students have been staying on campus there to do the same. Prep classes involve intensive focus on the key subjects of the WASSCE, including English, physics, and literature. The Liberian educational system is very challenged; but with every passing year, improvements are made and progress can be felt.

“I am very grateful to the mission for all their tireless support to my academic journey at the Booker Washington Institute and for allowing me to acquire knowledge in the plumbing trade. Thank you for your support to the poor children of Liberia.”

— Numanle

“I am very happy to be graduating from BWI and to be completing my secondary education. I could not do this without the help of Liberia Mission. I want to thank my sponsor for the high level of support shown to me and my poor family here in Liberia.”

— Josephine

The exams start on Friday, September 10 and run until Thursday, September 30 … three weeks! They can last all day and be very exhausting, so we will give every opportunity for rest and relaxation to our students; but they will also need to study to keep their minds sharp! The WASSCE period also represents the final days of being an LMI beneficiary. Although our students are forever a part of our family, they begin a new chapter in their lives as they either seek employment or continue their studies in university (for which we offer some financial assistance). However, they take an important step in their lives by leaving the mission, armed with all the benefits that living by our motto of “God Education Work” has given them.

“High school was great, and I was able to put time into my lessons. Now I am very glad to be out of high school. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the Liberia Mission family, the directors, past and present, and all of those benefactors that contributed greatly toward my education. I don’t want to forget my personal, hard-working sponsors who put all their effort toward my education. I am now preparing to start another great journey in college, where I hope to study Public Administration as a major, and Accounting as a minor.”

— Charles

“I am very excited because I am leaving grade school and chasing my future dream in college. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the Liberia Mission family for their tireless support toward my academic journey, most especially I would like to thank Father Don.”

— Precious

Providing our students with a quality education, whether it be in their elementary and junior-high years at St. Anthony or during their high school years at St. Kizito or Booker Washington Institute, is one of our top priorities at Liberia Mission. The WASSCE is the culmination of years of study and hard work that our students have faced in Liberia’s challenging educational setting. Please pray for our senior students as they take their exams and progress to the next chapter in their lives!!

Thank you for reading! Please consider supporting Liberia Mission!
